According to the Center for Disease Control, permanent makeup is very safe. The Society for Permanent Cosmetics Professionals has a strict code of ethics and requires all licensed permanent cosmetic professionals to be certified with their organization. This certification requires the technician take infection control and bloodborne pathogen courses. Using all disposable items while doing permanent cosmetics has made permanent makeup even safer with today's strict standards.
In North Carolina permanent cosmetic professionals need to be permitted and approved with the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources Division of Health and undergo regular yearly inspections with this organization along with maintaining a valid tattoo permit.

How permanent is permanent makeup? Will it fade over time and when should the color be freshened up?
Yes permanent makeup does fade over time. Most people will need to have their permanent makeup freshened up at some point anywhere from one to five years depending on the procedure and the person. Every person is different when it comes to how well the color holds in their skin. Be sure to discuss this with Sherry during your consultation. Some things to take into consideration:
A light color may fade faster than a dark color.
Intensity of color implanted during application and how many applications were received.
Some people just have skin that holds color better than others.
Sun exposure and exfoliating creams over time can shorten the lifetime of your permanent makeup color. Using sunscreen and sunglasses can increase the life of your permanent makeup.
If your color is fading over time, you can have the color freshened up. This way you will not be starting from scratch. Sherry will be able to go right over the color and keep the same shape and generally charge much less than a new procedure.
Are the procedures painful?
Everyone is different in their tolerance and sensitivity. Sherry uses a topical numbing gel, liquid or cream to help numb the area that will be worked on before the procedure is started. The numbing topical will be reapplied throughout the procedure to ensure client comfort. Sherry will continue to communicate with the client during the procedure regarding comfort. Things to do to be more comfortable during procedure:
Menstrual cycle - you may experience more sensitivity a week before and during your menstrual cycle. You may want to schedule around this particular time of the month.
You can take a nonprescription pain reliever before the procedure. Your doctor could also prescribe something for your permanent makeup procedures. Talk with Sherry about this.
Eat before a procedure so that you will be comfortable.
Get a good night’s sleep the night before.
Don’t drink coffee or consume any caffeine type products the day of your procedure.
Why does permanent makeup look so natural?
Because the color is implanted “under” the outermost layer of the skin, it takes on a more natural, softer appearance, unlike pencils and liner placed on top of the skin. The skill of the permanent makeup artist and the ability to custom blend colors to go with different skin tones and hair coloring helps with maintaining a natural look.
